Looking for Facial Reference
Posted On 06/18/2008 03:12:34 by Marc_Spess

Tonight I'm looking for some facial image references for a sculpture. The sculpt will be for the new affiliate program. What I plan to do is make a business character. I'll put his picture in the affiliate program as a way to promote it....or at least to make it look nicer then a page full of just text. I was planning on doing the frog exersize but this is a little more important for me right at the moment.

The first thing I'm doing is using google's image search. You just go to google.com and click the images link. Here's the first thing that pops up:

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=faces&gbv=2

From clicking the first image I learned that if you average many faces of people together into one - it takes less processing power of your mind to digest it. Making it attactive. I swear, that's what they say

But I need to keep my mind focused. Ok where to find a good looking guys face to sculpt. Ok, let's try search for....sexy faces:

What is this?

what?

Yikes, not exactly my idea of a sexy face. Ok let's try a search for...sexy male model faces. Maybe if they are a model they will look appealing. I'm not making a monster here!

much better

That's more like it. So that is my method of finding pictures for character designs. I'll most likely make him cartoony during the sculpting process and dress him differently. Any time your making a character just remember google images.

Thanks Bob, from a book search on google it looks like it's full of great ideas. Sculpting faces is one of my favorite things, I never knew a book like that existed.

marc theres a great old cartooning book called, Cartooning the Head and Figure, by Jack Hamm. Great book for quick facial expression references. was published in 1967, but i believe its still available. This book helped me out alot when i first started cartooning.

That's cool! I remember him. He designed your Elvis sculpt  as well as that drawing of yourself you used to have in the contact section right?  I believe he is a member here as well. He is a really good artist, very unique designs.

Hey Mike, that sketch is of Gogue, the friend I have in Spain who is a cartoonist. He made some really cool drawings for me a long time ago.

I remember those old castilene containers you have in the background there - Ha-ha-ha. Also is that a sculptural sketch I see as well? I wonder what he might have been for? hhhmmm...
