Stop Motion Convention
Posted On 09/03/2008 20:44:08 by bobharling1

I'm kinda new to stop motion animation, but i have been researching the craft for over 3 months now, reading alot of forums, checking out all the websites and so on.

I know its not a mainstream industry, what i mean is, its not like other professions where such a thing as a convention is common place. But the more i think about it, why isnt there one.

I brought this subject up on sma.com and got 2 responses, from the usual suspects Nick H and Strider. Nick informed me, there was talk of one 2 years ago, but nothing was done and he never heard about it again.

I think a Stop Motion Animation Convention would be a huge help to the art form. Think about how better off we all would be, if we met each year or maybe every 2 years. First it would be an incredible Stop Motion only film festival. Second, we could have all the major suppliers of all supplies we need for our puppets and sets in one place and third, what a hell of a party it would be

So, i started a poll to get the ball rolling (ease in-ease out). Just to see what the reaction would be to such an idea. I have worked with setting up such events in the past, as far as booking hotel rooms , best time of the year to do so, setting up booths for both display and selling  of goods, and all the other details, like who will be the guest speakers and how are we paying for their flights and food.(which usually pays for itself)

So please tell me your thoughts on this subject, i know its not a simple task, with animators so widespread around the world. But give this some thought, i think it would really help. Ok i'm done going blah blah blah

(^ another way to generate a convention is pulling one together  ON LINE like in secondlife or something.

(^ a virtual space where  folk could at least learn they are not alone.

It would be awesome to have one in britain and usa cause it might be hard to travel for some people.

(^ ok, I'll chew yer ear off a bit byte on this one.

(^ sigh. stop motion comes in two encampments:

(^ ok maybe 3.

 (^ purists.hobbyists, and alchemists.

(^ the purists tend to sbe specially gun shy of sharing their pressumed never been invented techniques: and  often are loners and or shut ins with very small tight group of associates  .

hobbyist play around with this sort of stuff: tend to be a mix of either VERY social minded and  thirsty for info,  or secluded  almost embarrased by thier peculiar interest.

96 alchemists?  sigh. very busy folk are they.

these are special guest types  who at one point or another dabbled in stop mo: but may as likly have ad to give it up to go CGI for financial resons

9^ so as to a convention?

hmmn.  works for world of warcraft.

MIGHT work  for stop mo: but as lio pointed out over on stomotionanimation.com:

many are ..secluded anti socialistic types.

9^ but. there may be a work around fer it:

namely? an online video feed of some sort  .

I'm less likly to COME to a convention  without child care and multple types of  things to do:

bu if there were a hook up to do collaberative showings of animation AS IT IS BEING SHOT: global feeds?

 might be interesting.

 twoway broadcast:

more on all this when I'm not exhausted from being out all day at a fair with the 4 main females in my life, and one little boy.

 (^ talk about plumb tuckered!

i've been involved, in setting up such events. you can make some good deals through the hotel and you charge per booth for vendors, selling their stuff. you normally make a small profit. but making a profit isnt the point. you can have a small entrance fee for advanced tickets and a bit larger for the public that day or weekend. thats normally how you pay for guest speakers flights in and such

It's a good idea. I actually think if it were heald in Portland it would have a huge turn-out. Portland has the largest amount of stop motion animators in the US, plus if you use google trends - Portland has the most people searching for stop motion online. As for paying for it - that's the hardest part. Maybe charging a fee for people to get in would be one way. Or making a profit on food/shacks sold, or a combination of things.
